DESCRIPTION

The Horticultural Activities class provide an environment that facilitates pre-vocational skills needed for successful community (social) re-integration and allows opportunities for personal development.  The activities in this class emphasize work related skills and habits for clients within the Work Adjustment Program.

MISSION

The mission of the Horticulture Activities class is to improve work related behaviors, attitudes, and skills designed for the client to achieve an optional level of functioning/ performance.  This class utilizes plants and horticultural activities to improve the social, educational, psychosocial, and physical adjustment of persons thus improving their body, mind, and spirits.

OBJECTIVES

Objectives of this class are to improve/enhance deficits in the following areas

Sensorimotor Components

· Neuromuscular: reflex, range  of motion, muscle tone, strength, endurance, and postural control.

· Motor: activity tolerance, fine motor coordination/dexterity, laterality, bilateral integration, visual motor integration.

Cognitive Integration and Cognitive Components

· Orientation

· Recognition

· Attention span

· Memory, sensory, working, long term, remote

· Sequencing

· Categorization

· Concept formation

· Intellectual operations in space

· Problem solving

· Generalization of learning

· Synthesis of Learning

Psychosocial Skills

· Psychological:  initiation of activity, termination of activity, self concept

· Social:  social conduct, conversation, self expression

· Self-management:  coping skills, time management, self control
